 Hawks too good for Highlanders

Hawks too good for Highlanders

18 Jun, 2009 07:24 AM
In a totally one-sided game, the Harden Hawks completely outclassed the Gordon Highlanders last Sunday in Goulburn, 104-0. Going from the score you would have thought they had switched to AFL for the day! Coach, Jason Pollard, rested himself and was able to observe as his team put on a stellar performance against the hapless Highlanders. Whilst it is great for the Hawks “for” total of points, it must be disheartening for the Highlanders. Hopefully, they will regroup for round two and it will be a more competitive game at the end of the year, as long as the Hawks win! They are a very hospitable lot however, and put on a great barbecue for players and supporters at their local hotel after the game.

This week the try scorers will be listed otherwise the Express will be taken over by describing each try in what proved to be a festival of tries.

Abed Atallah definitely had his golden boot on converting 16 tries and scoring 1 try himself. Other try scorers were Luke Brown 5, Graham Murray 4, Joe Dyball 2, Andrew Jones 2, Michael Stadtmiller 2, Nathan Schofield 1 and Lewis Grange 1.

It was Michael Stadtmiller’s first game and the coach said he had a good one as did the rest of the side. In such a good performance by all the team it was hard to single out the best players. Luke Brown was voted Player’s player, Graham Murray was awarded Man of the Match, and Brendan Ford received the Coach’s award.

The Harden Hawks are now sitting on top of the table on 14 points, 2 points ahead of Braidwood. Binalong are third on 10 points (they lost 2 points for playing an uncleared player in Round 1), followed by Bungendore on 10 and Goulburn on 6. It seems a three-way comp but Bungendore have a habit of hitting their straps in the latter half of the year and Goulburn and Crookwell can never be written off. It promises to be a great game this week against Braidwood and playing at Braidwood will be tougher still. Note the later starting time of 3pm.

The Football Club’s planned Women in League celebrations had to be postponed as the bus was cancelled at the last minute due to lack of numbers. It was always going to be a tough call to organize a Sunday bus to Goulburn. Thank you to those supporters who were planning to help with the decorations and it will go ahead this weekend. The bus is leaving the Country Club at 11 am. Please book your seat with Jason or Jodie Pollard as the seat numbers will be limited and the game is one not to be missed!

The Women in League celebration and fund raising for Breast Cancer research will continue at the Club’s next home game against Crookwell on, June 27. There is a football club meeting on Thursday, June 18, (6.30pm at Country Club) to finalise plans for this and also to discuss the forming of a fund raising sub-committee. If you are interested in any of these activities, please come along to the meeting. Full details will be published in next week’s Express.

Good luck to the boys this week in the top of the table clash Saturday, June 20, at 3 pm in Braidwood.

Until next week, go the mighty Hawks!
