Last Saturday, the Hawks played the Crookwell Green Devils at McLean Oval and had a resounding 58-0 victory.
Matthew Stewart drew first blood with the first try in the fifth minute which was unconverted, from that point on the Hawks never looked back. After an excellent backing movement, Andrew Jones scored next in the corner which was also unconverted from a difficult kick. As in previous games this year, the Hawks defence was outstanding and the Crookwell side found it hard to make any ground. When in possession the Hawks were also able to play good attacking football and scored five more tries before half time to lead 32 -0.
The Hawks started well in the second half after Duncan Stewart crossed out wide after receiving a great pass from Matthew Stewart. Next a great break by Daniel Drew saw him race away for another try under the post. Further tries to Graham Murray, Matthew Stewart and Brendan Ford resulted in the final score 58-0.
Michael Pickham was awarded Man of the Match, Graham Moorby was voted Player’s player and Luke Brown was awarded the Mobil Coaches award.
The Crookwell side tried very hard with a depleted bench but were completely outclassed by the Hawks. And if anyone is in any doubt about the value of Junior League, 16 out of the 19 players who played on Saturday have come through the junior ranks of the Harden Hawks. And Junior League is getting stronger every year. It all augers well for the return of an Under 18s side next year.
The Club had a very successful day again and thank you to everyone who helped with the Women in League celebrations and fund raising for the Breast Cancer cause. Supporters can still purchase raffle tickets in the Pink Panthers jumper and cap donated by Graham Hill. These tickets are on sale at the Country Club. A special thank you to Sarah Hearne and Nathan Schofield for helping us out with the club’s oval raffle and selling so many tickets -it must be Sarah’s good looks, but Nathan looked sooooo pretty in pink! It was a wonder the boys could concentrate playing football; Mind you, Graham Murray looked almost as pretty in his pink Tina Turner wig in the Club after the game! Thank you also to Simon Watts for donating the football back to the Club he purchased in the auction. This will be used in further fundraising for the Breast Cancer campaign.
The boys also looked very smart in the 2009 Polo shirts which can be purchased from Jodie at Panthers or Christina at INGSCO. We are ordering some more in smaller sizes, so place your order as these will be limited.
On a very sad note, the Club held a one minute’s silence at the start of the game in memory of Mrs Janet Quinn who recently passed away. The Quinn family have been wonderful supporters of the Football Club and everyone sends their sincere condolences to the family for the loss of their beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
This week the Harden Hawks travel to Bungendore to play the Bungendore Tigers. This game has been changed to the later starting time of 3pm. Bungendore forfeited last weekend, so the Club is hopeful that last year’s premiers have been able to regroup and there will be a more competitive game of football.
Until next week, go the Harden Hawks! CH
