Last Saturday the Harden Hawks travelled to Bungendore and had a narrow 24-22 victory against the Bungendore Tigers. The game was rescheduled at 4.15pm in a move that should have helped the Tigers, but even playing in semi darkness did not deter our Hawks.
It was a very tough encounter with the Tigers getting the upper hand early and soon they had a handy 10 nil lead. The Hawks hit back with a converted try to trail 10-6. The Tigers kept the pressure on and were able to skip away to a 20-6 lead. With their backs to the wall, the Hawks then staged a great fight back and finally hit the lead 22-20
The Tigers scored again and it seemed all over when they lead 24 -22. With time running out the Hawks were trapped in their in goal from a Bungendore grubber kick.Todd Brown took a short drop out which was smartly dived on by Nathan Schofield. Luke Brown scooted away for a short run and with 30 seconds remaining, Daniel Drew made a break from 70 metres to
score a great match winning try.
It was a gutsy win with Bungendore throwing everything at the young Hawks. Even the name calling and intimidatory tactics from the Bungendore bench fell on deaf ears as the Hawks concentrated on the main game.
The player’s player was awarded to Daniel Drew, Ben Jamieson was the man of the match and the coach’s award was given to Lewis Grange.
This Saturday the Harden Hawks play the Crookwell Green Devils at home. Crookwell are the only side that has beaten Harden this year so no doubt the boys will be keen to avenge that and stay at the top of the table. At the time of writing, we are trying to arrange an earlier starting time of 2pm (originally 3pm) so watch notice boards for details. The time will also be advised on 2LF.
This Saturday is a special “Pink Ladies Day” and all mothers, grandmothers, sisters, partners and supporters of the Hawks are invited to join us in a celebration of women’s involvement in the Harden Hawks. The day is also a fund raiser for breast cancer and prostate cancer research. Delta Agribusiness have kindly loaned the club a marquee for the day and a special thank you to Tony Matchet for his help. The boys will be playing in pink jumpers which will be auctioned at the Harden Country Club in the evening. For any enquiries contact Jodie Pollard or Michelle Howe.
After this weekend there is a bye and then the big one against Binalong at Binalong.
Watch out for the starting time and see you at McLean on Saturday. Go the Hawks.
