Hard fought win

13 May, 2010 08:20 AM
Last Saturday at McLean oval, the Harden Hawks played Goulburn Exchange and had a hard fought 32-22 victory.

The Hawks did not start well conceding a penalty from the kick off.

Goulburn kept the pressure on the Hawks and after kicking a 40/20, they swung the ball out wide to score a converted try.

Both sides were making handling errors but finally Luke Brown scored a try which was converted by Peter Adam.

Goulburn scored next to lead 12-6 but the Hawks were next with a great run by Mick Alcorn which was converted.

Solid defence by the big Goulburn boys was making it difficult for the Hawks to make breaks.

Nathan Schofield scored next after a good run by Ben Jamieson and then Peter Adam scored converting his own try for the Hawks to lead 20-12. The game continued to see saw when Goulburn scored again though the Hawks had a narrow lead at half time 20-18.

The Hawks started the second half well (must have received a half time ‘roasting” from Nathan) and after eight minutes Lewis Grange scored a try which Peter Adam converted. Goulburn hit back again and the score was 26-22. With 10 minutes to go, the Hawks sealed the game when Danial Drew scored near the post and Peter Adam again converted leading to the final score 32-22.

This was not the best display by the Hawks but a win’s a win and the ‘young guns’ continue to impress supporters with their enthusiasm and skill.

The side has been boosted by the return of Joe Dyball and Michael Pickham. Mick Alcorn was voted player’s player, Lewis Grange, man of the match and Todd Elliot received the coach’s award.

The club would again like to thank all our sponsors and remind all our supporters to support these businesses when they can.

Major sponsors this year are the Harden Country Club, City Group, BP Harden and Foodworks. The local businesses and our ground and player sponsors are essential to the survival of the football club and many other sporting groups and associations. Once again we endorse the shop local campaign and ask people to think what this community would be like without our local businesses supporting the town. And don’t forget, they employ a lot of people too!

This week the Club farewelled one of its favourite sons with a huge guard of honour at the funeral of Reg Cullen. The Club also held a minute’s silence and tribute at the game at the sad loss of Reg, Hazel Blundell and John Blundell. All will be sadly missed by the football community.

This week the Hawks play Bungendore at home and then have an extended break. Bungendore had a bye last week and were woeful against Binalong but are expected to be at full strength this week. Perhaps they really are depleted this year but come along on Saturday and find out. The game starts at 3pm.

Until next week, go the Harden Hawks.
