The South-West Brahmans travelled to Canberra last Saturday to play the competition leaders the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in both grades at Greenway Stadium. Both sides were beaten with the seniors going down 52 points to 12 and the Under 18’s goingdown 20 points to 12.
The first grade were always going to find it hard going, after Tuggeranong put early points on the board with three quick tries. And although the Brahmans John Quinn put up some great kick-off ball deep into the corners resulting in line drop-outs the Brahmans failed to take advantage of the good field position these kicks created whether it was due to lack of recent football the Brahmans were making too many fundamental errors and continually found themselves at the struggle end of the field defending their own line.
There were some good individual efforts from players like Graham Moorby, James Blair, Joe Dyball and Josh Glover in the forwards but there was little or no cohesion or team work. As the first half wore on the constant scrambling defence was causing a lot of tired legs resulting in dropped balls and missed tackles. This allowed the Bushrangers to make metres in attack and towards the end of the first half they again turned pressure into points with two more tries.
While the Bushrangers controlled the half the Brahmans showed glimpses of the football they can play and on one of these occasions scored a try and had another one disallowed. Abed Attallah who by his standards was having a quiet game converted and the lunch time score was 24 to 6.
After the break the Brahmans appeared to be getting their second wind and were making inroads into Bushrangers defence moving the ball about with some determination and purpose. But again the lack of football and match condition started to show and it was not long before the errors once again crept back into the Brahmans game. The Tuggeranong side who did not have the same long lay off were once again able to regain control of the match.
Even though the game was well and truly beyond them the Brahmans did not give in and scored again. It was towards the end of the game that they were starting to play better football. They had rediscovered their kick chase game and were starting to muscle up in defence. Hopefully all good signs for the next few week’s of football.
