JUGIONG Polocrosse players Will and Todd Weston have reached the top levels of their chosen sport, recently selected in the Australian National Open Mixed Polocrosse team following a very successful year.
Will, who was also named vice-captain of the side and his brother Todd gained selection following brilliant performances at the Australian National Titles in Perth in October where they played in the NSW Open State side.
It was a dominating performance with the side beating Queensland in the Grand Final by a massive nine goals, winning the national title.
They are joined in the national team by fellow NSW player Chris Anderson from Maitland as well as former Young player Robert Sibley, who played this year for Western Australia.
Will explained that the two will play in their first international competition in the quadrangular series at Bong Bong race course near Moss Vale from April 16 to 19.
“We will play a round robin carnival against teams from New Zealand, South Africa and England, followed by a final series between the two top teams.,” Will said.
This is very early in the Australian Polocrosse season meaning that the team will be going into the competition with little time in the saddle in recent times.
“The horses are still out in the paddock and we’ll leave them to rest a little while longer.
“We’re hoping to bring them in and get into a couple of carnivals in Victoria before the quad series.
The Weston brothers will play in Ballarat and then Lake George, a fortnight before the international series and
hopefully get their eye in and horses ready for a strong showing on behalf of the
country.
The Australian players must provide a pool of 60 horses for the international competition to avoid quarantine issues with international horses coming into the country.
“We will be providing two horses each for the quad series though chances are we won’t get to ride our own,” Will explained.
“Still, with very good quality horses in the pool, it will then come down to just how good the riders are for each country.
“It is a very exciting time, and we are looking forward to representing our country on the international stage.”
