Wallendbeen’s Robbie Anderson has claimed yet another NSW Approved Riders jockey’s title.
Entering the final meeting of the season at Wean on the weekend with a one win buffer over rival Clint Lundholm, Anderson started the day in the best possible manner, booting home the first winner and when Lundholm could only manage to pilot home the final winner on the card, Anderson collected his fourth title in the past five seasons.
Anderson and Lundholm, who was a former leading country apprentice before weight forced him into the amateur ranks, endured a ding-dong battle for this year’s crown.
“Clint was in front early in the season but I was able to slowly peg him back,” Anderson said.
“Over the past four or five meetings we had been swapping the lead, but I was able to get a one win break heading into Wean.”
During the season Anderson rode a host of multiple winners on the one day, including three at Ardlethan, a track he rates as his favourite, three at Cowra and doubles at Crookwell, Tomingley and Harden where he rode for Gloaming racing Stables.
He won the Cup at all five meets as well as the Mooree and Garah Cups, while another highlight of his season came when he kicked home a winner at Rosehill on Melbourne Cup day.
Anderson travels thousands of kilometres every year pursuing his career as illustrated by the seven-and-a-half hour trip each way to compete at Wean.
“We break the trip up sometimes by staying overnight somewhere, but if you want to pick up rides you’ve got to be prepared to travel,” he said.
Anderson said he’ll be back again next season to try and defend the title he has won for the past two years and hopefully give the crowd something to cheer about.
