 Slammin' Sam scoops round 7

Slammin' Sam scoops round 7

10 Feb, 2012 02:21 PM
UP and coming junior golfer Sam Whitehead, representing the wily gang called Ranga’s Crew, has secured the win in round seven with a very impressive 45 off the stick for a 30.5 nett.

After missing narrowly in round four, Sam has produced the goods this week and scored the lion’s share of the points for his team enabling them to hold their position in an ever changing leader board. Well done Sam. There are quite a few juniors playing in the field this summer and I hope it wets their appetite for playing comp each week over the winter months.

In second place was the dark horse of the field, Ev Shea. Ev is an astute lady who would have worked her run just right in round seven to ensure she will have some form running into the vital final rounds. Well done Ev and a special comment on the few members in the Pink Panthers who helped your team to score. Not all played, yet those who did showed pure quality to rack up a sweet 21.5 points lifting the team up a couple of places on the ladder.

In third place this week was the hit and miss Craig Filmer with 39 off the beater and a bit of everything in his round by all accounts, including an out of bounds on the first hole (pssst - I think I can hole this from the tee ?.. NOT), a birdie and many pars. Craig got lucky in a three-way countback for third almost going hole for hole in the countback calculations.

Other scores of note this week included ‘Pagey’ and Mr and Mrs Elliott from the Gut Punchers, Brian Wales, Sean Stevens and John Quinn from the Whales’, Jason Pollard and Karen Glover (again) from those In & Out Thingies, Peter Steinke, Rod Ceeney and the Hangover Man from the Delta Debateables, the ever present Ian Clarke-Bruce from Parkers Smash Repairs, Kate Menz, Maryann Fitzgerald & Pat Walker from the Panthers (there must be some sort of cougar joke in their somewhere), the Hock Man finally scoring again for Sturgiss Painters and Craig Henman and Ashley Hall having good rounds for TBA.

The top three teams seem relatively secure in their slots as we finish round seven, with the Beached Whales out in the lead and then followed by the tussle for second between The Debateables and the In & Out Thingies.

The real changes are happening in the mid-field ranks.

While Parkers Smash Repairs had a lean week to be just holding fourth, Pagey’s Gut Punchers have screamed from the cheap seats into fifth. Good attendance by the majority of your team can really make a difference now that everyone has been struck by the handicappers long stick. Three rounds of mayhem are left to sort this ladder out.

Another good turnout occurred over the weekend with 61 hitting the front nine in the modified layout which is aimed at resting the tees after recent renovation and maintenance and aren’t they looking good after the recent rain. The move to the old summer tee on the first played with a few minds, the shorter tee on the third is lulling us into a false sense of security for when the boys move to a trial tee over the water later in the year and the real winner when talking to people over beers is the summer tee on the eight. At 155 metres uphill to an unseen green, this is proving to be interesting for both the men and the ladies alike. I wonder what the back nine holds for us this week.

In the individual stakes, the winners of this week’s prizes are:

first and club voucher - Sam Whitehead (7.5 points)

second and two balls - Ev Shea (6.5 points)

third and one ball - Craig Filmer (6 points) c/bk.

The table (team, points, progressive score) is as follows after week seven:

Beached Whales, 20.5, 152

Delta Debateables, 16.5, 136

In & Out Thingies, 14.5, 130.5

Parker’s Smash Repairs, 8, 144

Pagey’s Gut Punchers, 23.5, 105.5

Sturgiss Painters, 10, 102

Ranga’s Crew, 16, 101.5

Pink Panthers, 21.5, 96.5

Squirrel Grippers, 3, 88

TBA, 10, 64

Executive Suite, 0, 19

Round eight is now set for this weekend and the back nine. Once again in housekeeping mode, please write your team name on the back of your card to assist the scoring process and please check your handicap on the board and put it on your card before signing it thereby not leaving all the pencilling to the co-ordinators. Thanks again.

Country Club News

The Board (via the Cranky Director) have asked me to remind all players and participants in the good will, cold lemonade and air conditioned shade afforded by our 19th hole, that memberships are now overdue.

Playing in the summer comp is a privilege and not a right that is afforded to members of our club. Summer comp players only need to be social members of the club, which is an outright steal at $15. Full members hoping to play at other club’s and venues will need to have their membership dues paid and current or their GolfLink number falls into default and is unusable at other courses.

It’s our club and its only right that to use the facilities we pay the dues that allow us to enjoy these pleasures.

The program for this year’s golf is in its final phases of drafting and will be sent to the printer soon. Keep an eye out for it on the bar along with the Scott Fuller nominations for the event at Young on February 12. It’s not too far away and we need you there to make the team stronger.
