Records tumble at the Country Club

29 Oct, 2009 07:08 AM
Once again the weather played a part in our golfing activities last week, producing ghastly heat on Wednesday followed by superb conditions on Friday and Saturday and then drizzling rain on Sunday, wiping out any chance of fixtures on that day.

On Saturday the men played their Medal of Medals Event, along with an Individual Stroke event for those not involved in the Medal event, all of which was played for Golfing Committee Trophies. Nine of the thirteen qualifiers turned out for the Medal event, plus another seven players completed the day’s field of sixteen.

As usual in this game a range of scores were recorded but as three scores were under par those player’s hopes were raised that they could achieve a win. Unfortunately for two of them the luck went in only one direction and a member of the B Grade contingent was granted incredible luck and he scored a huge, twelve under par score card and won the Medal of Medals Event plus the Trophy. Spencer Bulbeck scored an 86 - 26 - 59 round, three shots clear of Ian Clarke-Bruce on 76 - 14 - 62 and nine shots away from Brett Johnson on 79 - 11 - 68. Ian won the runner up trophy and a golf ball was awarded to Brett plus Todd Elliott and Darrell Cassidy on 71’s, after a count back including Peter Steinke and Tam Kennedy, also on 71’s. Congratulations to all of the winners.

As a matter of interest, the winning score on Saturday was the lowest score recorded in the past two seasons of Individual Stroke Events, thirty-one events in total, beating Fred Douglass’ record of 61, achieved in early March 2008. Who said golf was a young man’s game? Spencer said that his 85 was the best score he had ever achieved since he started playing regularly back in the 1980’s.

On Saturday also, the ladies enjoyed an Individual Stroke Event, attracting seven contestants, again for Golfing Committee Trophies. This event was won by Beth Kuhn with a score of 98 - 35 - 63; the runner up was June Spencer on 100 - 33 - 67 and the ball winner was Toni Filmer on 90 - 22 - 68. Congratulations to all the winners.

The Midweek Competition was contested by 19 players, who, having just survived the heat on Wednesday then turned out again on Friday to produce some rather good scorecards. Five players scored the average scratch score or better but nine scored par or better when their handicaps were taken off. Jim Wright took out the prize with a 39.5 score after a count back with Greg Heycox, who is really trying hard to record a win. Peter Orr and Elaine Heycox scored 42’s, Pat Walker a 43, Fred Douglass a 44, Allan Hill a 45.5 and Tam Kennedy scored a par, 47. Jim’s win cost him 7.5 points off his handicap so he now plays off 11. Congratulations on a great win Jim.

This Saturday is our Golfing Season Closing Day. It is the day that all the season’s major trophies are presented to their recipients and traditionally the new golfing committee is elected for the 2010 season.

The new committee plans next year’s fixtures and also controls the golfing activities of the Country Club for the next twelve months. Many members have been known to be rather vocal about some aspects of the running of the golfing activities so here is your chance to get on the committee and have your ideas approved by them by being part of it. The committee is looking for new blood and new ideas, so how about it? The election will be held immediately after the close of play and before the presentations. Light snacks will be served

The Closing Day Event is a Mixed / Medley three person, preferably two men and a lady, aggregate competition, being sponsored by Ceeney’s 5 Star Supermarket.

A REMINDER of the Bunyip Pre-school and Masonicare Charity Day on the 7th of November. This is a 2 person Ambrose Event beginning with a shotgun start at 12.30 pm so all participants are asked to be at the club by 12 noon. The entry fee is $15. Tee times can be booked at the club bar.

The Scott Fuller Shield Event is to be played here on the 15th of November. Nominations are required as early as possible for tee time allocations.

Well I had my day of Very Happy Golfing, so come along and enjoy yours! SMB
