Mixed fortunes for midweek golf comp

18 Feb, 2010 06:15 AM
A week of mixed fortunes, last week, as the Midweek Comp attracted the largest field for a long time and the Summer Comp on the weekend was hampered by heavy rain.

The rain however has also filled the dam to overflowing and generated lots of new green growth.

The Midweek Comp included eight lady players in the field of twenty-seven but the scoring was not as high as on previous weeks.

Eight players scored 60 or less in the scratch scoring, being led by the winner of both the scratch and nett scorers, David Walker, who achieved a score of 52 – 15.5 – 36.5. David James scored a 55, Maurie King a 57, Michael McPake a 58, Bill Kildea, Ron Fuller and Garth Webb scored 59’s and in Maurie King’s second round he scored a 60.

In the nett scores David Walker, 36.5, came home 4.5 strokes ahead of Ron Fuller’s 41 and Bill Kildea was next on 42.

Spencer Bulbeck had two consistent rounds of 44.5 and 45.5 and David James also had a 45.5.

Ron Fuller’s second round scored a 46 and Lou Boenesch scored a par round of 47. David Walker’s score, 10.5 shots below his handicap, earned him a new handicap of 7.5. Congratulations David.

The Summer Comp was mired in intermittent, heavy rain and those who had planned to play on Sunday morning were especially restricted.

One team failed to get any players on the course, another team only got two, however as up to a third of the players managed to play it was decided that those scores were valid and were recorded, resulting in a change of leaders in the comp.

The results for round 9 are:

Progressive Team Scores:

Early Openers 130.5

Debateables 124

Gut Punchers 108

Test Tube Babies 81 and

Backyard Hackers 80.5.

The Weekly Highest Scorers were:

Nick Fuller, 9 points, won the Club Prize,

Tam Kennedy, 6 points, won 2 golf balls and

Jason Pollard, 5 points, won 1 golf ball.

Congratulations to all of the winners this week.

The above results indicates that a great competition is looming this coming weekend at both ends of the table, as only 6.5 points separate the leading teams and only half a point separates those at the tail end of the field.

Another interesting factor is the strength of the junior player contingent in this comp. We are certainly looking forward to the results from this weekend’s games.

Happy Golfing!
