A MAN of the land once said to me: “There is no such thing as bad rain, sometimes it is just inconvenient.”
This was certainly the case last Saturday when 42 golfers braved the conditions to play a two person ambrose for the annual Peter Davis memorial Can Assist fundraiser.
A quick check of vehicles still in front of the club on Sunday morning suggests other events may have taken place after the golf.
Simon Glover emerged from the golfing wilderness to team up with Greg Grounds and return the day’s best scratch score of 72.
One shot further back was the relatively new combination of Ev Shea and Maryanne Fitzgerald who recorded a one under round of 73.
Chris Hocking and David Ings had the day’s best nett score of 64, followed by Damian and Cheryl Minehan’s nett 65.
Beryl O’Brien showed her fast finishing second the previous week was no fluke when she defeated stablemate Betty Grace to win the midweek stroke event by six shots.
Taking some gloss from the win was the fact that the heartless handicapper reduced Beryl’s handicap by some 19 shots.
Following the coring of the greens earlier this week the golf committee felt it necessary to make some changes of dates for upcoming events.
While these changes will no doubt effect some members’ plans, the condition of the greens for the 2011 Men’s Championships was given prime consideration.
Firstly, this weekend’s monthly medal has been transferred to Saturday, October 15 and will be replaced by a stableford event.
The first and second championship rounds will now take place on October 29 and 30 with the final two rounds to be played on November 5 and 6.
Presentation day has now been put back one week to November 12.
To those members whose plans have been disrupted by these changes the committee apologises, but in the circumstances we believe the best option was taken.
To all our lady golfers competing in the South West Tournament at Temora this weekend, the best of luck.
The Captain’s Helper.
