DAVID Walker has shown a clean set of heels to beat his rivals by at least two shots in this week’s round of the Harden Summer Golf Comp.
Loving the course drying out, David has rallied pars and bogeys at every corner to say goodbye to that old handicap and ably assist his team to consolidate second place. David’s work was capably supported by our wily veteran’s club champion, Darryl Cassidy, who has jumped back into form with a solid 32 nett. I hope you parleyed this form into a skins win you two.
In a countback, second and third was decided by two chaps on 5.5 points this week. Rob Head from the Beached Whales has snuck home for second from a very impressive 31.5 nett also recorded by Jamie Parker of Parker’s Smash Repairs. Your prizes are available from the bar during business hours guys, enjoy.
Other scores of note this week included Ben Brady in the Beached Whales, Karen Glover on fire again in the In & Out Thingies, Ian Clarke-Bruce and Mark Parker for Smash Repairs, the always improving Joshua Quinn in Ranga’s Crew, Kate (the burglar) Menz for the Panthers, the hottest prospect for ladies golf next year Michelle Irving in Sturgiss Painters (five weeks straight breaking her handicap), and Ashley Hall in the TBA team. Keep up the good work you lot, the handicapper loves mathematics, especially subtraction.
At the close of round six there are some worrying (or pleasing if you are on top) gaps in the field starting to form. Clear 15 point leaders at this stage are the Beached Whales yet, if last year is any indication, the duelling second and third teams little struggle led to them hauling down first place from round six to the finish line. These two teams are The Delta Debateables and the In & Out Thingies.
Of most notice in looking over the statistics and trends are two key points: the teams that turn out en masse each week are scoring the best, consistently. The other is that team and individual stand out scores are now hard fought for in the top teams. By this I mean that the bolters are gone and their handicaps slashed hard. There will soon be the late comp bolters who have been pocketing handicap and will be ready to pounce late. Some notable regular golfers would appear to be in this category. Some scary scores lay just around the corner I fear.

Round seven is now set for this weekend. This upcoming weekend we set our sights on the front nine.
In housekeeping mode, please write your team name on the back of your card for assisting the scoring process and please check your handicap on the board and not leave all the pencilling to the co-ordinators. Thanks.
Scott Fuller Shield Round 2
On Sunday last Harden fielded a team that performed admirably in the scorching heat of Temora. The greens were slick, the course exhibited a lot of run and at least 88 players turned out for the field.
The catering was, as always in Temora, very nice with pikelets and scones to greet us and the best bush hamburgers for lunch washed down with ice cold refreshments.
Like the weather, the scoring was hot with the days best round of 49 coming from Young and Temora pairs. We, as a club, finished second and consolidated our position overall at second. Young won the day and secured a probable victory for our pool with only their home round left to play.
For Harden, first place went to Maryann Fitzgerald and Pat Walker with a great score of 46 points. Second for Harden went to Bill Kildea and David James on 44 points with Aidan Filmer carrying his Dad around for 43 points. A little birdie tells me that Aidan’s birdie 3 for 5 points on the 6th was a highlight followed by their wipe the next hole, the immediate lowlight.
The time sheet nomination form for the third round of the Scott Fuller Shield at Young on February 12 is on the bar.
The day will again be a shotgun start set for 10am, which is a format that seems to be working well for this event. It is a mixed medley event so it can be boys, girls, or mixed. I hope we get a big field to try and give it one last shake.
See you all, golfing soon !
