Last Saturday and Sunday the lady golfers played the final two rounds of the 2010 Club Championships.
On Saturday 10 players braved the cold for the 3rd round. June Spencer’s nett 72 was good enough to win the days trophy with balls going to Maryanne Fitzgerald nett 72, Jeanette Elliott nett 74 and Lexie Preston nett 74. On Sunday, in much warmer weather after the fog cleared, 11 ladies played the final round with a 68 nett by Ev Shea winning the days trophy. Ball competition winners were Maryanne Fitzgerald nett 70, Beth Kuhn nett 70, Jeanette Elliott nett 71.
The 72 hole Ladies Club Champion for 2010 is Jeanette Elliott with a four round total of 332. The ‘B’ Grade Champion after 77 holes was June Spencer who won after a 5 hole sudden death playoff with Betty Grace. Both ladies had four round totals of 436. Lexie Preston showed the benefit of practice and consistency to claim her first championship event when she took out ‘C’ Grade with a total of 462. Congratulations to all champions and to all who competed over the four rounds.
The Ness Flannery Memorial for the best nett score over the four championship rounds was shared by Ev Shea and Maryanne Fitzgerald on 286.
Last Sunday 13 men played for the July Monthly Medal and a trophy donated by Cooper’s Choice Cut Butchery. The ‘B’ Grade medal and trophy and guzzlers mug were won by Maurie King with a good score of 68 nett. The ‘A’ Grade medal was won by Peter Steinke with a 71 nett, while ball competition winners were Peter Steinke, Michale McPake and Tim Beveridge. The draw for a carton of refreshments was won by Ian Clarke-Bruce, although correct weight hasn’t yet been declared due to a protest pending.
The field of only 13 players is extremely disturbing to the golf committee and raises the question, ‘what is the future of golf in Harden when interest is decreasing along with the number of golfers?’
The midweek 12 hole competition numbers were also down last week with only 16 rounds played. Tam Kennedy’s nett 43 was the best returned and earned him a four shot handicap reduction. Tam just fell in after a countback from Beryl Laragy with Allan Hill a further shot back on nett 44.
This Saturday the men play an individual stroke event for the McPake brother’s trophy while the ladies play a 3BBB Vs par which is a qualifier for a NSW club med event.
On Sunday the first of two mixed foursomes championship round will be played for Harden Butchery trophies.
