Big weekend for golfers

24 Sep, 2009 07:11 AM
Last weekend readers may have noticed a huge increase in the number of vehicles towing golf carts driving through town. That was caused by a total of 202 golfers arriving from near and far, even one from South Australia, including places like Mittagong, Sydney, Canberra and most surrounding districts, all vying for the 32 prizes on offer during the Australian 2 Man Ambrose Golf Tournament, sponsored by Blue Circle Southern Minerals and run by the Country Club each year on the third weekend in September. Added to those were the four prizes sponsored by Harvey Norman, Young for the players getting Nearest to the Pin on two holes on each day

The weather was perfect for both days and the organisation of the event was fantastic. The results of the competition are:

The 36 Hole Scratch Champions were G Cheshire of Cootamundra and J Blackman with a score of 120. The Runners up were G Sheares and M McFarlane on 126.

The B Grade Champions were S & J Porter on 140. The Runners up were local player Bob Stevenson and Ian Kinlyside on 141.

The A Grade Nett winners were K McDougall and G Blundell on 121.5. The Runners up were D Hogan and N Hazell on 122.

The B Grade Nett winners were S McNamara and M Bell on 125.5. The Runners up were again locals, Rick Preston and Rick Knight-Gregson on 127.5.

Saturday’s winners were: 18 Hole A Grade Scratch- Local player Peter Elliott and Young’s G Walker on 62. B Grade Scratch- Again a local Peter Steinke and J Manners on 68. A Grade Nett Winners were B Brown and T Bradley on 59.5. B Grade Nett winners were G Ennis and T Boyd on 63.

NTP winners were G Blundell on the 5th and G Murdoch on the 10th.

Sunday’s winners were: A Grade Scratch winners were G Foster and M Flanagan on 63.

B Grade Scratch winners were S Campbell and G Wurth on 71. A Grade Nett winners were M Taylor and J Campbell on 59.75. B Grade Nett winners were P Millington and G Paton on 62.5.

NTP winners were G Lloyd on the 5th and P Nicholl on the 10th.

Congratulations to all of our winners and many, many thanks to our sponsors. All of the players were asked to leave their internet addresses so that they could be invited back next year for the 20th Anniversary of this very popular event.

The Midweek Competition last week was used by the local golfers as a practice session for the major event last weekend, however the result was a little surprising. Twenty one players took part and produced much better scores than in previous weeks; in fact 15 of the 21 players got nett scores better than par. The best scratch score was again achieved by David James with a 52, with Ron Fuller and Garth Webb next on 56 and Tam Kennedy on 57. The Nett results though produced better results led by Elaine Heycox on 37 (and she wasn’t practising for the weekend), 9 under par, so she’ll be playing off 27 next week and no doubt featuring among the winners again soon. Hugh Wales came second on 38.5, Greg Heycox next on 39.5 and David James was next with a nett 40. Congratulations Elaine. Will we see your name up again soon or will it be Greg’s turn next?

This weekend an Individual Stroke event is being played, on Saturday, by both the ladies and the men, plus the ladies are playing their Medal of Medals Event. On Sunday the HOLDEN SCRAMBLE event, a 4 Person Ambrose Competition, sponsored by Jenkins Garage, Cootamundra and run by Phil Cartwright of Young is being played at Harden.

Next Tuesday and Wednesday the Veteran Women’s Golf Association of NSW are holding a Tournament here at Harden also, so there are lots of competitions to excite the golfing spectator this coming week. Lot’s of Luck to the competitors and Happy Golfing!
