Golden Oldies eclipsed in ‘thriller’

31 Jan, 2008 05:33 AM
The Annual Australia Day weekend cricket clash between Harden’s Sparre Cup side and a composite of former ‘Golden Oldies’ players, possibly was the highlight of the local Aussie Day festivities. Particularly after a Thurkettle yabbie, named ‘The Phantom’ was unceremoniously eliminated from competition the previous day.

Golden Oldies extremely confidently sent the Sparre Cuppers into bat when Captain David Coggan called tails.

The pitch was well grassed, yet hard, as Harry Henman and young Nick Fuller sauntered out to stand their innings.

Henman was clean bowled by Rod Ceeney, however Fuller battled on to score 30 runs.

Maryanne Fitzgerald, without batting pads, was quite rattled initially, before settling into stride. With her score on just three, Fitzy lofted a Ron Fuller delivery to mid-wicket where Paul McCarthy launched himself up-and backwards, thrusting his right hand skyward and took a screamer. It was possibly a catch reminiscent of Paul ‘fatty’ Vautin’s in a TV match a few years earlier (only better).
