Branch champions

03 Jun, 2010 07:16 AM
The South West Slopes 12 years girls representative soccer side have created a possible first for the South West association by claiming the Branch Championship title earlier this month.

Coached by former Cootamundra Strikers legend Mick Godbier, the team, which contained six Harden girls travelled to Griffith on the weekend of May 8 and 9 where they finished unbeaten for the weekend and deserved winners of the title.

The 13 girl squad consisted of strong Harden talent in Pheobe McGeoch, Emma James, Sophie West, Matilda Flanery, Natasha Goode and Jessica Doolan, six Cootamundra players Erin Holder, Kya Godbier, Kirrilee Cameron, Olivia Moore, Shannon Caldwell and Tenelle Eccelston while Tumut’s Annie McGrath rounded out the team.

The Saturday saw the girls play three games, defeating Albury 2-1, drawing nil-all with a strong Griffith side and then giving Wagga a complete football lesson by thrashing them 12-0 in a result players, parents and supporters alike were thrilled with.

On the Sunday the South West side maintained a clean sheet, downing Albury 3-0, Wagga 2-0 and Griffith 1-0 in a match that was described as the best of the weekend.

The game was played at both ends and was of very high standard.

The South West defensive line of Erin, Olivia, Kirrilee, Tanelle and Natasha worked tirelessly, not allowing Griffith a clean strike on goal.

In the midfield Kya, Annie, Matilda and Jessica worked overtime to get the ball through the park to strikers, Emma, Pheobe, Shannon and Sophie.

These girls wore their hearts on their sleeve and gave 110 per cent which certainly paid off as, after several unlucky attempts on goal, they snuck one home for a deserving 1-0 victory.

The girls played each game in the true spirit of football, hard but fair.

They are great sportswomen and ambassadors for the South West Slopes, their own clubs, their families and most importantly themselves and will now represent Riverina at the Country Cup at Nowra over the June long weekend.

A special thank you to all the parents who, without their support, weekends like this would not be possible.
