 Harden smashes Coota

Harden smashes Coota

03 Dec, 2009 06:18 AM
LAST season’s Merrin Cup runners-up Harden 1 produced the most dominate performance of the current cricket season with a 220-run trouncing of Central Hotel 2 at Roberts Park on Saturday.

And while cricket is, and always will be, a team game, Harden’s victory can be attributed almost entirely to the efforts of three players.

Taking the opportunity to bat first in the hope of giving everyone a hit against the Central 2 attack, only three were required as the home side thumped their way to 1-240 off a shortened 35 overs.

Captain and opener Nathan Schofield blasted a brilliant 109 not out, the third century of the season, as he and Bill Stanley, who finished unbeaten on 93, shared in a 209-run second wicket stand.

Accompanied by his brother Matt at the start of the innings, the two Schofields put on 31 for the first wicket before Matt was bowled by Matt Garness for 11.

That wicket came in the seventh over, however it was to be the only moment of joy for the visitors as Schofield and Stanley took control.

At drinks after the 17th over, they had moved the score along to 90, Schofield in great touch on 41 and Stanley looking good on 20.

It was the second half of the innings in which they applied the afterburners, with all seven Central bowlers used copping some flack.

Boundaries were hard to come by at the multi purpose oval, with Schofield finding the fence six times and Stanley eight, the latter also inflating his score with two huge sixes.

With overs running out, Schofield brought up the magical three figures with a six of his own, much to the delight of his teammates and a small band of home supporters.

Stanley was robbed of the chance to join his skipper in the century club due to the loss of five overs from a late start, although he did face the last four balls of the innings when he needed 10 to reach triple figures.

After a frustrating day in the field, the Central side was about to be demoralised even further as Rob Barron went on a one-man wrecking mission.

After two overs Central was 0-2, however within the space of another 10 they were all out for 20, one of the lowest totals ever recorded in the Merrin Cup.

Barron was almost unstoppable as he claimed a season-best 8-9, the third time in three summers he has taken eight in an innings.

Three times he took multiple wickets in the one over, with his victims for the day including Dylan Berkrey, Tayce Cheshire, Kevin Damschke, Matt Garness, Wayd Millar, Tom Cronin, Josh Black and Jason Cronin.

At one stage he claimed 7-3 off 23 deliveries, while Jarrod Sharman had to settle for 2-11 off six overs operating at the other end.

One of Sharman’s wickets was that of Claire Berkrey, who agreed to fill in for the day and while she was one of five Central players to record a duck, at least she can lay claim to getting bat on ball.

While Schofield’s and Stanley’s 209-run partnership was one of dominance, it wasn’t the highest in recent history, with ben Nott and Wayne Farnsworth adding 246 in a Stribley Shield match against Yass in 2002/03, Darren Connell (104 not out) and Scott Roberts (101 not out) plundering 230 for Big O three seasons ago and Central Hotel pair Jono Rolfe (171) and Adam Twyford (75) combining for a 213-run effort in season 2005/06.

Still it was a remarkable effort for our local cricketers, and a record that will take some beating.
