A WOMBAT cricketing tradition is set to be revived in February when a team known as Brennan's XI will play an invitational Wombat XI.
The match is being put together by Mark Brennan, who now lives in Temora but whose family originally came from Wombat.
This cricket tradition began in the 1940s when a Frank Noonan took a team of regional cricketers on two tours of Tasmania in the late-1940s. The team was then known as Noonan's XI.
And although not an official representative team, the tour and matches played in Tasmania had to be approved by the cricketing bodies in NSW and Tasmania.
In the 1950s Mark Brennan's grandfather, Laurie, took over the team at Frank's request and led three tours of the Brennan's XI to Tasmania in 1951, 1954 and 1956.
These tours were not holidays.
A report in The Young Witness published in January 1952 noted how the team that toured Tasmania in late-1951 had won 19 out of 22 matches played during the month-long tour.
The report also noted that in a match in Queensborough, a suburb of Hobart, that all the players in the opposing team were called Calvert as they were all related.
Mark Brennan's father, Mike, led tours to Tasmania in 1969 and 1973.
Mark Brennan then revived the tradition and took teams to Tasmania in 2007, 2009 ansd 2011.
Mark Brennan, who is now organising the reunion match to played on February 26, said he was hoping to get as many locals and members of previous Brennan's XI touring parties together so they could share their cricket experiences.
The weekend's activities will begin with informal drinks and dinner at the Wombat Hotel at 6pm on Saturday, February 25. The reunion match, which will be a 20/20 game, will be played on the Wagenbah Oval starting at 10am on Sunday, February 26. The day will start with a breakfast from 9am.
