World Youth Day Cross and Icon to pass through Harden

14 Feb, 2008 05:53 AM
This Sunday the World Youth Day (WYD) Cross and Icon will pass through Harden-Murrumburrah as part of its journey to the 2008 World Youth Day in Sydney in July.

In 1984, Pope John Paul II entrusted the large but simple wooden Cross to the youth of the world. For more than 20 years the Cross has been handed on from one host nation to the next.

The World Youth Day Cross and Icon, which features a painted portrait of the Virgin Mary, hold similar significance to the Olympic Games Torch.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Bathurst will hand over the Cross and Icon to the Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn in a ceremony on the bridge over the Lachlan River in Cowra, this Friday from 6pm.

The procession will then make its way to West Wyalong and Temora before being joined by a “Muster of Utes” through the streets of Stockinbingal at 7am this Sunday on its way to Cootamundra.

The WYD Cross and Icon will depart Cootamundra at around 11am on Sunday before travelling through Wallendbeen on its way towards Harden.
