Royal success

At just 17 local teenager Josh Carter looks to have a solid and successful future ahead of him.

Involved in the Murrumburrah High School Farm Club for the past five years the year 12 student has found his niche in life, working with show cattle.

Not only does Josh dedicate a lot of his time to the high school cattle team but he is now successfully building up a stud of his own.

Murrimboola Shorthorn stud is made up of two shorthorn heifers which he looks after on a rented block of land in Murrumburrah. The heifers were purchased from well respected cattle studs in NSW.

Last week Josh tested his knowledge and skills proving that hard work and dedication does pay off returning from the Royal Canberra Show with a swag of ribbons.

Josh not only paraded cattle for the farm club but took three of his own shorthorn cattle to the show.

Going into the ring on Friday it was the first time Josh had shown his Shorthorn cattle at a Royal Show and he was chuffed to have his heifer Prudence placed second and his older heifer Spry place first in their age groups.

During the show Josh also took part in the Junior Judging section which had over 280 competitors from around the state.

All students participated in judging with Josh then being invited to the microphone to speak and talk on how he judged each entrant. Although many would not be surprised at this boys talent Josh was overwhelmed at receiving a second place in the 17-25 year age group. A wonderful feat by all means.

Having had an already successful few days the highlight to an already pleasing Canberra Royal Show for this 17-year-old was his success in the parading competition.

Coming second in his parading heat to fellow year 12 student and best friend Joe Fitzgerald the pair went into the ring for the next round of judging which resulted in Josh claiming victory over Joe.

Due to his win in the age final he joined all final winners from the various age categories to re-enter the ring for the judging of the champion parader.

Josh again showed his skill and talent being sashed the 2010 Reserve Champion parader of Canberra Royal Show.

These amazing achievements can be an easy feat for many children born and raised on farming properties but to Josh’s credit, a young man who has lived in town his whole life with little background in farming or cattle, has strived to be one of the best in the cattle show ring.

Damn right Carter is one of the best in the show ring. You can always depend on Carter if you need help prepping your animals or want some info.. he is an excellent parader and a great friend and he deserves alot more credit than he gets. (:
