21 Jan, 2010 06:19 AM
Sausages will be sizzling, the bacon will be crackling and the tea and coffee flowing at this year’s annual Harden Murrumburrah Australia Day celebrations.

With almost 400 sausages, 20kg of bacon, 40 loaves of bread, 20 dozen eggs and 40 litres of orange juice ordered this year’s event is set to be celebrated in style.

Organiser’s say plans are well on track and are encouraging all local residents to come down and enjoy a delicious hot breakfast for a small gold coin donation while also celebrating with this year’s Australia Day Award winners.

Five awards will be presented at the breakfast for winners of the Junior Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Community Involvement in Sport and the Town Care Award.

Harden Mayor and Australia Day event organizer Chris Manchester said he is very confident Tuesday’s Australia Day Awards and Breakfast will be highly successful.

“We always get good community support to the event and I have no doubt this year will be the same,” he said.

“Australia Day is always a good time to get together as a community and celebrate the wonderful people we have in the shire.”

As in previous years the special Australia Day Awards and Breakfast will be held in Newson Park starting at 8am.

There will be entertainment by local musicians Stewart Bruce, Les Graham and friends as well as the chance to meet Australia Day ambassador Denise Beckwith.

Ms Beckwith is a 30-year-old Paralympian and disability rights advocate who has represented Australia on 13 occasions in competitive swimming.

Highlighting her swimming career having represented Australia at the 2000 Paralympic Games where she competed in everything from 50m freestyle to the 200m freestyle as well as a team member of both the 4 x 50m medley and the 4 x 50m freestyle relays.

Having retired from competitive swimming Ms Beckwith now works at the peak disability rights and advocacy agency, People with Disability Australia Incorporated as an advocate.

Ms Beckwith, who proudly calls Sydney home, has also recently been appointed to the NSW Disability Council, which has advisory functions to the NSW Minister of Disability Services.

As part of her official Australia Day duties Ms Beckwith will travel with Harden Mayor Chris Manchester to celebrate the festivities at Wombat.

Wombat’s celebrations will include the annual tractor pull from 9.30am, a street parade starting at midday followed by a traditional sausage sizzle at 1pm.

Also keeping the kids entertained on the day will be horse wagon rides and a jumping castle while older residents will enjoy the street stalls, car club and motorbike display and the antique engine display.

When it came to where to go to feed the hordes expected at Harden Murrumburrah’s Australia Day celebrations, Mayor Chris Manchester was spoilt for choice. Both the Harden Butchery and Cooper’s Choice Cut Butchery will supply meat for the annual breakfast. Cr Manchester is pictured with Harden’s own ‘Sausage King’, Rodney Cooper and Lorraine Brown.
