The best start to the cropping season in a hundred years is what many farmers and agronomists are saying about this season.
Above average rainfall and perfect weather temperatures have meant farmers have been able to get their crops in the ground in ideal conditions.
Delta Agribusiness agronomist Tim Condon said sowing conditions have never been better.
“This is a one in a hundred year start to the sowing season,” he said.
“Most farmers will have majority of their early crop sowing complete with Canola and Lupins’ ideal sowing window being late April to mid May.
“Grazing wheats are all in and up and growers are now moving through their main season wheat and pasture sowing program.”
Mr Condon said the weather has been exceptionally good with ideal soil moisture also saying there was a good opportunity to get rid of weeds with the timing of rain events this season.
“We do want the rain to continue throughout the year with an average of 40mm to 50mm per month,” he said.
“I really don’t think we’ve ever seen these type of top conditions at the start of the season before.
“Stock is in good condition and there’s plenty of food available.
“Farmers now need to be vigilant during the establishment phase of crops, monitoring for weeds and insects.”
With farmers at full speed getting crops in Harden diesel distributor Peter Joseph from BP Harden is working flat strap to keep up the demand of farmers.
“We’ve been flat out delivering diesel to farmers for the past few months,” he said.
“Due to the increased demand this year we have purchased a new prime mover tanker.
“Sowing season is our peak period and I think this month alone we’ll have distributed around 50,000 to 60,000 litres of diesel.”
As of Wednesday lunchtime Harden had recorded a total of 23mm of rain bringing May’s monthly total to 40mm.
Currently the total of rain recorded in Harden for 2010 is 397mm with more rain predicted for Saturday and a possible thunderstorm on Sunday.
