The weather turned out just perfect for the third Annual Harden Kite Festival held at the racecourse in Harden.
Although the wind was down in the morning it picked up throughout the day and it turned out to be perfect conditions for some kite flying fun.
There was lots of free fun for everyone including free face painting and the fabulous entertainment provided by musical groups Bearfax and a wonderful performance by the Murrumburrah Public schools Marimbas.
The Temora Apex clubs train was kept busy taking passengers for a free ride and there were lots of free kite competitions for people to enter and the free helium balloons were very popular, especially with some innovative individuals who used the balloons to keep long tails aloft for the longest tail competition.
The kite boarders and buggies were really in their elements this year with a good supply of wind to keeping them zooming up and down the airstrip for most of the day.
The number of market stalls was slightly down on last year’s event but overall the organisers were delighted that the attendance with just under 2,200 people attending the annual event. The gold coin donations collected at the gate totalled $1,005 which will provide the committee with some start capital for the 2009 Kite Festival. The yellow entry coupons that were given out to each person that attended served a number of very important roles. Firstly, they provided the attendees with the opportunity of winning $100 cash (which was won by a teenager from Young). They also provided the committee with the ability to count attendees on the day as well as gain very valuable demographics and suggestions from the public on how they could improve the Festival even further. The stats gathered showed that people came mainly from the Harden district but also attracted visitors from further away - Grenfell, Cootamundra, Griffith, Wagga, Riverina, Bathurst/Lithgow, Canberra and the south coast. There were no negative comments on the forms with the main suggestion being the need for more seating and shade which the committee hope to address prior to the next Festival.
It was a great event that saw people of all ages enjoying the simple pleasures of some kite flying fun. A number of families had three generations out flying kites together on the day.
It was also great to see some of the new councillors out on the day with the deputy mayor Tony Flanery out flying a kite with his family.
The hardworking Harden Kite Festival Committee would like to thank all the committee members, helpers and the Harden Rotary club for the help they provided on the day and to everyone else who helped and attended to make the event another great day on the local calendar.
A camera card was found on the day by organisers, if you are missing one give Jan Ryan a call on 6386 4161.
